The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
