The Banking Giant Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Admission

The banking leader has informed employees working at its state-of-the-art headquarters in Manhattan that they are required to share their physical characteristics to access the high-value skyscraper.

Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory

The banking corporation had previously envisioned for the collection of employee biometrics at its recently opened high-rise to be optional.

Nevertheless, employees of the biggest American bank who have begun work at the new headquarters since this summer have received electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "required".

How Biometric Access Works

Biometric access demands employees to scan their hand geometry to gain access security gates in the entrance area rather than swiping their identification cards.

Office Complex Information

The bank's headquarters, which allegedly cost $3bn to develop, will in time function as a home for thousands of staff members once it is fully occupied later this year.

Safety Justification

The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the use of biological markers for admission is intended to make the premises better protected.

Special Cases

There are exceptions for some employees who will still be able to use a ID card for admission, although the requirements for who will utilize more standard badge entry remains unspecified.

Additional Technological Features

Complementing the introduction of biometric readers, the company has also launched the "Corporate Access" smartphone application, which serves as a virtual ID and portal for worker amenities.

The app enables employees to manage visitor access, explore indoor maps of the facility and pre-order meals from the building's multiple food service providers.

Broader Safety Concerns

The implementation of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, especially those with significant operations in New York, look to enhance safety following the shooting of the chief executive of one of the leading healthcare providers in July.

Brian Thompson, the boss of the healthcare company, was fatally shot not far from the financial district.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is unclear if the financial firm aims to introduce physical identifier entry for staff at its locations in other important economic centers, such as London.

Employee Tracking Developments

The decision comes within discussion over the employment of systems to observe staff by their organizations, including observing workplace presence.

Earlier this year, all JP Morgan workers on mixed remote-office plans were directed they must return to the physical location five days a week.

Leadership Viewpoint

The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has described JP Morgan's recently opened skyscraper as a "tangible expression" of the organization.

The banker, one of the influential banking figures, recently alerted that the probability of the American markets experiencing a decline was much more substantial than many investors thought.
