The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response

The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement follows a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the full message from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our players.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following several months of conversations, he starts with us on the specified date.

His management and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, put it on the line, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but fans can look forward to further news as development progresses.
