Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Following Dominant Win Over Wales.
The England head coach voiced his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy stronger backing from the Wembley crowd during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was happy to see his side showcase their good form, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter settling the game. Yet, he was not content with the energy at the national stadium.
“With one and a half training days to get ready against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” the coach commented. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. It was quiet. There was no any energy back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the team earned greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater backing in periods where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to refocus, but that’s the way it went and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from risking a dispute among fans, the manager also created controversy by excluding Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. Yet the choice was validated by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his position.”
Bellamy Seeks Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a important World Cup qualifier on next week, take lessons from their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“This is why I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy said. “I need to see our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today fills me with motivation.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was taken off at the break after clattering into a post and will be a doubt when England play Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
